Civil War Grave Restoration Project.
On Saturday September 23, 2023, the grave restoration project (Save the Veterans) will hold another session at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Volunteers will be cleaning Civil War grave stones starting at 9:00. Coffee, water and snacks will be provided for volunteers. Please consider helping with this project as many hands are needed. There is no need to bring cleaning materials, as buckets, brushes, soap and water will be provided. You may want to bring a kneeing pad as some grave stones are small and require kneeing. Most Civil War grave stones are over a hundred years old and have never been cleaned, which makes then difficult to read. This is an excellent community project so please consider coming and helping. For more information on this project, contact Daniel Reinke at [email protected] or Dennis Moore at [email protected].

CIVIL WAR GRAVESTONE REPATRIATION PROJECT 2025
- Over the Spring and Summer, the Manitowoc County Civil War Round Table will be replacing nine unreadable Civil War gravestones in the Grand Army of the Republic area of Evergreen Cemetery. In addition, we will be replacing the four corner markers that outline the GAR area. These corner markers are no longer readable and mostly broken up into pieces. We will also be placing two new gravestones on the graves of two Civil War veterans who have never had a gravestone or any kind of marker. The nine old gravestones are being removed by the cemetery and are being destroyed as required by the federal government. The date set of the dedication of the new gravestones is Saturday June 7, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. The gravestone Repatriation Project is being headed by Manitowoc County Civil War Round Table board member Dan Reinke.
